What is Pilates?

Pilates Cadillac Pilates is a form of exercise that emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility & awareness. It creates efficiency of movement; makes the body leaner & the muscles longer; & through specific movements it heightens body awareness, thus supporting any athletic activity one might frequent! Additionally, many people use Pilates as an adjunct to current or past physical rehabilitation, since Pilates is geared towards alleviating several key issues like back problems, joint issues & weight-bearing injuries & problems. Finally, Pilates is one of the best modalities for creating sure-fire pelvic, joint & rotator stabilization, & most assuredly core strength.

Actually, core strength is the foundation upon which Pilates is built.  The muscles of the deep internal abdomen & back provide both stability & flexibility to the spine & trunk. Traditionally, weaknesses in these two areas cause a whole host of problems, anywhere from the more serious spinal & disc issues to simple mobility challenges.  Often those folks that suffer from acute back pain find that by just stabilizing, strengthening & supporting these deep core muscles that pain & pressure disappear allowing the body to move more fluidly or freely.

Some of the best things about Pilates is that it is versatile and accessible, & it works well for a very wide range of people.  Athletes, dancers, ice skaters, seniors, yogis, golfers, engineers & those entering or exiting rehab all benefit from working with Pilates.  Due to varying springs, specific movements & gravity, injured individuals can competently perform basic movement patterns, while elite athletes can be completely challenged by adding unstable surfaces, increasing spring resistances, using larger ranges of motion, more vertical positions, and complex movement patterns.  Hence, Pilates proves to be both a useful tool in a rehabilitation setting and an effective way to maximize sports performance.
